The Rally

Basically this is a banger rally starting in Calais, France and ending in Napoli, Italy, passing over the Swiss Alps on the way. It covers approx. 1500 miles incuding Stelvio Pass where Lotus tested the Elise. But we also have the drive from Edinburgh to Dover so that adds an extra 500 miles to the journey.

The Car

The only rules governing the car are that it must be bought for less than £100 and it must be road legal (insured, mot'd etc.). Theres no point in cheating and spending a bit more because it just wouldn't be in the spirit of the rally and we think it would be a whole lot less fun.

The Route

Starting on the 23rd of September, we depart Calais and head of toward Sarnen, Switzerland. There is a choice of two routes, one avoiding French Tolls and one which takes us through five countries. A rash decision will be made the night before depending on how the car has performed getting to the start. There will be an observation challenge during this stage.

After an overnight stay we then set off to Tirano. This is Swiss Alps day and takes in up to 8 mountain passes and looks to be a very punishing for both the car and driviers. In between all this driving we will be expected to participate in 'S2N2005 Photo Competition From Hell'. Whatever that means!?

On the third day we leave Tirano and accelerate at full pelt along a fixed route to Viterbo, playing S2N2005 Poker along the way. This involves collecting specific pictures based on descriptions which you then exchange for cards to make up a poker hand. I'm not entirely sure how this is gonna work but i'm sure we'll give it our best shot.

The final day is the slow day, to give our car a fighting chance of making it to the end. The rally finishes, and i quote, 'somewhere north of Naples'. Good luck to us on finding that!!!. There will be a challenge on this day, but it is yet to be revealed. Maybe it will be to find that 'somewhere north of Naples'.

The Winner

There are prizes for the winning team(s). This is based purely on a points system. Points are earned from the challenges and not for being the first to the finishing line.

There are also prizes for the following:

Biggest Pile Of Rubbish, Longest Team to Hitchhike, Team Who Suffered The Most* and Best Bodge

* Self inflicted or not - doesn't matter

The Rules

THE IMPORTANT RULE

Drive safely. Drive within your own limits, the limits of your passengers, the limits of your car, and with care and attention to other road users. We cannot stress the importance of good road behaviour on an event like this enough. Please drive carefully.

MOT & INSURANCE CERTIFICATES

Your MOT Certificate and Insurance Certificate will need to be presented on the first day of the Rally. Failure to produce your documents will result in you being excluded from the Rally.

RALLY ORGANISER'S DECISION IS FINAL

No arguing.

CONDITION OF VEHICLE

The car must have a valid MOT certificate that covers it between not only the first day of the Rally but also the last day of the Rally. The car must also be able to pass any Police spot check. Although the car must be a banger - its doesn't mean it should be unfit for the road.

INSURANCE

Your car and drivers must have valid car insurance to drive in the UK and Europe. Anyone discovered without insurance will be disqualified from the Rally.

DRIVING LICENSE

All drivers must have a valid UK Driving license. Anyone found driving their vehicle without a driving license will be disqualified. If you are not from the UK, you must ensure that your driving license covers you in all the countries you intend to visit.

THE CAR ITSELF

The vehicle must cost less than ?100. Not ?135, not ?200, ?100. If you did not purchase the car you must provide a signed witness statement from someone that they feel £100 is on the expensive side as a valuation for your car. It must also state that they wouldn't buy it for ?101.

BASIC SAFTEY

Please do not carry fuel in petrol cans, jerry cans, or anything able to contain a liquid. France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy & Austria have perfectly good petrol stations. If you are determined to bring extra fuel you must have a working and tested Fire Extinguisher. It is your job to check the extinguisher before you set out on the Rally.

DISPOSING OF YOUR VEHICLE

It is your responsibilty to dispose of your car, if that is your intention, when we reach Naples. We would encourage anyone considering this to either sell the vehicle, or find a local scrap yard in Naples before leaving the UK. Your car must under no circumstances be left in any airport car park.
